Piece for Practicing Basic Saw Sam Sai from Phraya Phumi Sewin (Chitr Chittasewi) by Assistant Professor Pansak Wandee

Abstract

This article aimed to present the principle of playing Saw Sam Sai from Phraya Phumi Sewin (Chitr Chittasewi) by studying from Lai Siang song and Ton Pleng Ching song accompanying Klo Rong (Accompaniment) according to the form of the Phraya Phumi Sewin (Chitr Chittasewi), which is the body of knowledge that the author has been transferred from Assistant Professor Pansak Wandee.

The high and low pitch practicing song is the introductory exercise Phraya Phumi Sewin (Chitr Chittasewi) had invented for learners to use in practicing the basic Saw Sam Sai. It is an essential fundamental practice that Phraya Phumi Sewin (Chitr Chittasewi) had laid down for the learners. When the learners can play this song, they will be equipped with basic skills of fingering for the three strings, using the bow and flipping the fiddle. They will then begin to practice the basic songs which are songs that use two patterns of fingering: the same finger pattern with phases 1 and 2, and the same finger pattern with phases 3 and 4 in which fingering is practiced with all three strings. Regarding the three-layered cymbal songs, Phraya Phumi Sewin (Chitr Chittasewi) used this song as the base song after the high and low pitch practicing song. He had composed this song for consistency, bow weight control in chorus pairs, practice using bow 4 and bow 8 systematically as well as practice using all four fingers, and the Shun finger which is the key finger for playing Saw Sam Sai. Therefore, these two songs are repetitive songs which are simple with systematic fingering and bow practices suitable to be applied as a song for basic Saw Sam Sai practice.
