Development of skills and career opportunities for the elderly in Nong Ngu Lueam Subdistrict Using the arrangement of fresh and artificial flowers and tying cloth in Thai ceremony as a base

Abstract
This research aimed to: (1) examine the level of participation behaviors of older persons in organizing ceremonial activities within the community; (2) study older persons’ occupational needs related to fresh flower arrangement, artificial flower arrangement, and fabric draping for Thai ceremonial events in Nong Ngu Lueam Subdistrict, Chaloem Phra Kiat District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province; and (3) analyze older persons’ satisfaction with occupational skill training activities and their effects on quality of life in three aspects: mental health, physical health, and income-generating ability. A mixed-methods approach was employed, integrating quantitative and qualitative research. The quantitative sample consisted of 329 older
persons. Research instruments included questionnaires, structured interviews, and focus group discussions. Qualitative informants comprised 20 committee members of the Nong Ngu Lueam Subdistrict Elderly Club.
In addition, 40 older persons participated in the occupational skill training activities, and 50 older persons completed satisfaction questionnaires. The research process was conducted using participatory action research to encourage active involvement of older persons throughout the study.
The findings revealed that (1) the overall level of participation behaviors of older persons in organizing community ceremonial activities was high, with cooperation in activities rated as the highest dimension; (2) the results of the needs assessment and implementation of skill training indicated that older persons expressed a strong demand for occupations related to flower arrangement and fabric draping. They were able to apply the acquired skills to support community ceremonial events, extend them into supplementary occupations, and reduce household and community expenses associated with ceremonial arrangements; and (3) overall satisfaction and quality of life after participation were at the highest level. Among the three dimensions, mental health received the highest mean score, followed by physical health and income-generating ability. These results suggest that the occupational skill training activities effectively promote participation, enhance happiness, and support income opportunities for older persons in the community in an appropriate and sustainable manner.
