Guidelines for instructional management to promoting historical contextualization

Abstract

Historical contextualization is the ability to reasonably explain the influences of context on historical events. To promote historical contextualization, teachers should plan and design instructional activities that challenge students’ knowledge and abilities. Students should practice learning activities through reading, analyzing, and interpreting various types of historical evidence. Teachers should select historical events that enhance cognitive conflict or historical tension as case studies to encourage students’ curiosity because it can stimulate them to research and find answers by themselves. Teachers should also encourage students to avoid using present-oriented concepts in judging the historical figures’ actions. Students should be encouraged to reconstruct historical contexts through teachers’ guided questions. Moreover, teachers should provide opportunities for students to use historical context knowledge to interpret the historical events as case studies. Developing historical contextualization will promote students to deeply understand historical events that happen to underpin the contexts and worldviews of people in the past. Through this, they will learn that they should avoid judging the past stories with present-oriented concepts. On the other hand, they will realize that knowledge of the historical context should be applied in explaining historical events.
