The Story of Mahajanaka by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej : Technique of Jataka Structure Adaptation for Communicate the Thoughts of the King

Abstract
The objectives of this study were to study the techniques of Jataka structure adaptation in The Story of Mahajanaka by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and to explore the thoughts of His Majesty through this adaptation. The researcher analyzed the story according to the concepts of Jataka writing focusing on its structure, the literary concepts of narrative writing and concepts of Intertextuality. The findings revealed that the techniques comprised: 1) the omission of the reasons why Lord Buddha told a group of disciples stories and the identification of characters in Jataka telling who was who during the Lord Buddha era, and 2) adaptation of the content by omitting, changing and adding some details. However, the original major sections of the story which were written in Bali were kept and these sections were also translated in Thai. These techniques communicated the thoughts of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej as follows: 1) His Majesty’s Philosophy regarding persistence, intellect and the development of Thai society, and 2) the creation of the contemporary Jataka story. This story, as a result, is uniquely different from the original story and other versions of the same story. In addition, it influenced the creation of various genres of Mahajanaka in Thai society. The Story of Mahajanaka by His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej has made Thai people realize the importance of Jataka stories and their roles in society.
