Abstract

This research aimed to synthesize guidelines of learning management that enhance mathematical discussions in an instructional unit about percentages by using five practices for facilitating mathematical discussions and to explore how the five practices influenced a group of 5th grade students’ participation. The research methodology was an action research that comprised  of 4 cycles and took10 hours in total.  The research instruments were four lesson plans, worksheets, reflective learning journals, video recordings of classroom observations, and mathematical discussion observations. This research synthesized 4  steps to enhance mathematical discussions regarding to the five practices.  They included preparing lesson plans, stimulating students' interests and establishing their understanding, creating and maintaining  learning environment in classrooms, and connecting ideas and building learning. Results showed that  the 5th graders used connecting , arguing mathematical ideas of others, reasoning,  and constructing procedures for solving problems during mathematical discussions.
