Music Activities for Elderly to Strengthen Mental Well-Being

Abstract

The study is aimed to 1) develop the music activities for elders; 2) evaluate the appropriateness of the music activities; and 3) evaluate the level of happiness the participants before and after the music activities. The participants are 30 65-year-old people listed in Ban Kong Elderlies Members, Tambon Kraiklang, Kong Krailat District, Sukhothai Province. The participants join 3 music activities within 3 weeks. The instruments used in this study were the interview request form for music activities, the music activities for elders, the evaluation form of the activities’ appropriateness and the evaluation form of happiness.


           The result of the study is found that 1) the music activities are appropriate with the elderlies’ demand including 3 music activities are Choi, Ram Tone, and Thai Folk Dance. The activities encourage interactions among the elderlies through dancing, singing, and moving their bodies along the songs. 2) The results of assessing the appropriateness of the music activity model for the elderly found that the activities were suitable for the elderly group at 4.78, the most appropriate. 3) Those activities entertain, provide fun and happiness, which is significantly statistically higher for 0.1


           There are additional comments from the elderly group that the music activities not only raise relaxation and happiness to the participants, they also positively change physical, mind, and emotional health of the elderlies and the surroundings. It is also suitable for the elderly in the Ban Kong community because it is an activity that most of the elderly people are familiar with and like. It is also a continuation of the ancient folk music of Thailand.
