THE INFLUENCES OF SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION ON MENTAL HEALTH STATUS AMONG UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN THAILAND

This research aimed to examine the influences of social media addiction on mental health of university students in Thailand. The samples included 555 undergraduate students in Thai universities, who were selected with stratified sampling method by regions, and the samples were purposively selected. A questionnaire was employed to collect data, containing 4 parts: demographic information of the samples, the test for social media addiction, UCLA loneliness scale, and DASS-21 (Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS-21)). Statistics exercised for data analysis were descriptive statistics and inferential statistics including Pearson’s Correlation Analysis, and simple linear regression analysis. The findings revealed that 1) social media addiction could be predicted for loneliness (b=.251, R2=4.2%) 2) Social media addiction could predict the depression (b=.219, R2=12.2%) and 3) social media addiction could be exercised to predict the anxiety (b=.164, R2=9.2%). Meanwhile, the social media addiction could be employed to predict the stress (b=.189 R2=10.5%) with statistical significance at .001 level.
