Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to examine pues, bueno, bien, ya and o sea, used as metadiscursive markers in conversation in Spanish, with the purpose of investigating their meaning and function, and studying how they are translated into Thai. Examples collected from conversations in selected works of contemporary literature in Spanish and their Thai translation are used as study corpus. Based on this corpus the core meaning and the specific meanings or functions are explained. As for translations, expressions used to translate the discourse markers in question are presented. Subsequently observations and suggestions about the chosen translation or omission in each case are given. It is hoped that the findings are useful for the learning, teaching and translation into Thai of those discourse markers.
