Abstract
ตำนาน หรือ ฎํณาล (ด็อม-นาล) ในภาษาเขมรหมายถึง เรื่องเล่าถึงเหตุการณ์ต่าง ๆ ที่เกิดขึ้นในอดีตสืบต่อกันมา เป็นเรื่องราวของบุคคลสำคัญของชนชาติต่าง ๆ ตลอดจนเรื่องราวเกี่ยวกับการสร้างบ้านแปงเมืองของชุมชนในสมัยโบราณ โดยเริ่มจากการถ่ายทอดทางมุขปาฐะ การบันทึกเป็นลายลักษณ์อักษร และการพิมพ์เผยแพร่ในเวลาต่อมา การถ่ายทอดและบันทึกในช่วงระยะเวลาห่างไกลกับการเกิดขึ้นของเหตุการณ์ อาจจะทำให้เนื้อหาสาระของตำนานมีทั้งข้อเท็จจริงปะปนกับเรื่องราวคล้ายกับนิทานปรัมปรา
