Abstract

Thai is often considered a language with a complex honorific system, yet there has been a paucity of research into the linguistic elements that constitute the Thai honorific system and the discrepancy between conventions and use of honorifics in contemporary Thai society. This study explores the ways in which honorific norms are negotiated via shifts of honorific forms in television interviews among Thai interactants with different types of social distance. Findings are discussed in terms of discursive im/politeness and its assessments according to traditional usage norms and from the perspective of interactants themselves and their own standards of acceptability.
