An Analysis of Chinese Language Test Papers in Thai University Entrance Examination
Main Article Content
Abstract
This paper aims to analyze the two versions of Chinese language test papers in Thai university entrance examination around 2009 respectively from three aspects: (1) the composition and structure of the paper; (2) the formats and contents of test questions; and (3) language ability tested based on the theories of language ability. It is found that the structure of the paper is gradually stable, and the layout of the paper is more reasonable. Secondly, the divisions of each component are more clear, the number of each type of questions is basically fixed. In addition, the scope of test contents is more comprehensive, the knowledge tested is more balanced and systematic. Since 2010, the test paper has added a systematic examination about Chinese culture. Meanwhile, it has appropriately reduced the proportion of questions regarding theoretical knowledge, and correspondingly increased the proportion of questions regarding practical language skills. And the overall proportion of various language abilities has gradually stabilized. In a word, after several revisions and integrations, the overall quality of Chinese language test papers in Thai entrance examination has improved. However, it is important to note that the examination of theoretical knowledges such as vocabularies and grammars, as well as reading skills, has always been the focus of the test. It also indicates that Chinese education in Thailand pays more attention to the teaching and examination of students' Chinese theoretical knowledge, but the teaching and examination of Chinese listening, speaking and other practical language skills are relatively lacking. The fast-changing Thai university entrance system, a series of policies and regulations related to Chinese education issued by the Thai education department, and the urgent need for optimization and improvement of the papers are the main reasons for the changes mentioned above.
