An Analysis of the Authoring Techniques and Concepts on Morality and Ethics of Imam Shāfiʻī ’s Poetry.

Abstract

The purposes of this research are to study and analyze the authoring techniques as well as the concepts on morality and ethics of Imam Sh fiʻī 's poetry to be presented through analytic descriptions.  The researcher compiled Imam Sh fiʻī 's poetic works from three anthologies entitled “Diwan Al-Imam Al- Sh fiʻī.” The studies find that Imam Sh fiʻī employed a total of 10 metric variations in creating his poetic works and that he chose to make use of 19 Al-Rawi in order to administer his prosodic conventions.  In terms of authoring techniques, the studies find that the imam-turned-poet employed figures of speech and various forms of wording in conveying the meanings to his readers in order for them to clearly see the pictures that inherently exist within his poetic works.  In addition, included in his writing techniques is the sonic beauty of external rhymes and internal rhymes.

As for the subject matter of his poetic works, Imam Sh fiʻī inserted into his works the concepts of morality and ethics practicable towards man and man’s own family, relatives and society in a gentle and smooth manner, and his approach thus made the readers come to reckon directly and indirectly. Such concepts could be applied as guidelines for being a person of good morals. Moreover, the imam-turned-poet also subtly added to his poetic works underlying philosophy and teaching principles through the presentations that reflected his lines of thought as a philosopher who was truly strict in moral principles, who expected to create good value for society in general and who supported the development of quality studies for the growth of man both in brains and wisdom along the lines of good morality and ethics.
