Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare neutral-tone (轻声) words appearing in beginner-level Chinese textbooks and a Thai-Chinese dictionaries with those in the Standard Chinese Dictionary application 《现代汉语词典 (7th edition)》. The research focuses on examining the consistency of neutral-tone words across different sources and exploring the characteristics of words that frequently appear with neutral tones to generate findings that can contribute to the development of Chinese language teaching in Thailand. The research sample included four beginner-level Chinese textbooks and one Thai-Chinese dictionary. Data from the textbooks covered lessons 1–15 of each book. The research method involved collecting neutral-tone words from the textbooks, cross-checking them against the Thai-Chinese dictionary, and then comparing these words with the Standard Chinese Dictionary in the mobile application. The analysis concentrated on the consistency, variations, patterns, and distinct attributes of neutral-tone words.

The results identified a total of 189 neutral-tone words. Among these, 137 words (72.49%) matched the Standard Chinese Dictionary, 25 words (13.23%) differed from the dictionary entries, and 27 words (14.29%) did not appear in the dictionary. Frequently occurring neutral-tone words can be categorized into nouns, verbs, pronouns, phrases, and reduplicated forms, indicating identifiable patterns and systematic tendencies in their usage. These findings highlight the importance of accurately presenting neutral-tone words in Chinese learning materials. These findings may also provide suggestions for improving textbook development and pronunciation instruction in Chinese language teaching in Thailand, particularly in authentic communicative contexts.
