A DEVELOPMENT OF RECREATION ACTIVITIES MANAGEMENT MODEL FOR COMMUNITY-BASED TOURISM IN THONBURI DISTRICT BANGKOK

Abstract

The purposes of this research are (1) to study and analyze the characteristics of recreational activities management in community tourist attractions in Thon Buri district of Bangkok Metropolis; (2) to develop a recreational activities management model for community-based tourism in Thon Buri district of Bangkok Metropolis; and (3) to assess the developed recreational activities management model for community-based tourism in Thon Buri district of Bangkok Metropolis. This research was a mixed-method research. Quantitative data were collected from tourists visiting the community, recreation experts, tourism experts, and community-based tourism experts; while qualitative data were collected from community leaders and community residents participating in providing community-based tourism. The employed research instruments were a questionnaire, an interview structure, and an appropriateness evaluation form for the recreational activities management model for community-based tourism. The research results are as follows:


Regarding the characteristics of recreational activities management in community tourist attractions in Thon Buri district of Bangkok Metropolis, it is found that the purposes of recreational activities do not have any negative impact on the local community way of life in the tourist areas. Recreational activities are appropriate for gender and age. The places and equipment that are involved in recreational activities are beautiful or attractive for persuading people to join the activities. The community creates familiarity between the event organizers and tourists. At present, recreational activities do not cause any harm to the participating tourists, with the arrangement of nursing services or first aid equipment for the tourists in case they are injured. Finally, the results obtained from participating in recreational activities are in line with the objectives of those activities.


As for the recreational activities management model for community-based tourism in Thon Buri district of Bangkok Metropolis, the researcher developed the model from the results of data analysis on tourists’ opinions and problems in organizing recreational activities. After that, it was adjusted according to the opinions of the experts who assessed the suitability of the developed recreational activities management model. It consists of 5 steps, namely, step 1: determining recreational activities; step 2: designing recreational activities; step 3: conductingrecreational activities; step 4: monitoring the recreational activities; and step 5: evaluation of results of recreational activities; every step of which must result from community participation.


As for the evaluation results of developed recreational activities management model for community-based tourism in Thon Buri district of Bangkok Metropolis, It is found that the appropriateness of the model is at the highest level in every aspect; therefore, the model is acceptable.
