PRINCIPLES OF DETERMINING THE MEANING OF UNFAMILIAR WORDS FROM CONTEXT

Abstract
The aim of this article is to present the principle of guessing the meaning of unfamiliar words from the context, types of context clues including external context clues and internal context clues, and the advantages of using the principle of guessing the meaning of unfamiliar words to enhance the reading ability of learners. Guessing the meaning of words is a principle that allows learners to understand the reading text effectively. Most learners have difficulties in reading because they do not know the meaning of the words. Therefore, if learners have enough knowledge of the principle of guessing the meaning of words, type of context clues and types of word formation which affect the meaning of words, they will gain more understanding in guessing and interpreting the meaning of words. For this reason, the learning and understanding of the word guessing principle is a way to help readers understand the contents and reading texts as well as increase their understanding on word meaning through the structure within the vocabulary, external context clues and internal context clues.
