A SYNTHESIS OF RESEARCH STUDIES ON CHILDREN AND YOUTH IN THAILAND

Abstract
The purposes of this research synthesis on children and youth in Thailand were (1) to compile, select and categorize the research studies on children and youth in Thailand and (2) to analyze and synthesize the findings of research studies on children and youth in Thailand. There were two sample groups in this research: The first sample group comprised research studies on children and youth that met the pre-determined inclusion criteria; and the second sample group comprised the experts who were interviewed to provide research information. The instruments used included a form for recording characteristics of research work, and an in-depth interview form for interviewing the experts.
The results of the study were as follows: (1) A total of 181 studies on children and youth in Thailand met the inclusion criteria; the contents and the frameworks of these studies were eligible for the synthesis. The information was synthesized based on the integration of the two principles (1.1) Convention on the rights of the child in the categories of the rights to survival, the rights to development, the rights to protection, and the rights to social participation and (1.2) Bronfenbrenner’s ecological model which includes children, youth, microsystem, interaction system, external system, and macro system. (2) The results of the analysis and synthesis of research studies revealed that the largest number of research studies that were synthesized belonged to the category of research on the rights to social participation in the interaction system that studies the relationship with the environment that is directly close to the children and youth, with the total number of 55 studies, or 30.38 percent, to be followed by the category of research on the rights to social participation in the external system focusing on the environment that has indirect effect on the children and youth, with the total number of 36 studies, or 19.89 percent. On the contrary, there were very few research studies in the macro system that study the environment that is the operational plans, policies, and laws concerning children and youth; while there was no research study concerning the rights to survival, the rights to protection, and the rights to social participation in the macro system that gives importance to practice guidelines, policies, laws concerning children and youth, and cultural diversity.
