Abstract

This research was a qualitative research aiming to analyze teachers’ perception and to determine the competencies of new generation vocational teachers as perceived by teachers during the Covid-19 pandemic. This was a case study of a vocational college in Lop Buri province. The researcher collected research data for one year and six months both before and during the Covid-19 pandemic. The key research informants were 22 college personnel classified into vocational teachers, heads of department/class level, and college administrators. The data were analyzed with the use of triangulation technique.

The results revealed that the competencies of new generation vocational teachers as perceived by teachers consisted of 6 competencies: (1) digital technology competency; (2) collaboration competency; (3) communication competency; (4) research and development competency; (5) data analysis competency; and (6) professional teacher competency. The 6 competencies consisted of 20 key performance indicators which covered teacher development standards for the core competency, functional competency, and professional competency. As such, the senior teachers ranked professional teacher competency as the first priority because the online instruction during the Covid-19 pandemic relied on the teachers who can impart the main beneficial knowledge and experiences to students under the time limitation of online classroom; while the new generation teachers ranked the digital technology competency as the first priority because the application of technology positively affected the online instruction during the Covid-19 pandemic which was the transformation toward education in the digital era.
