Abstract

This research is a study of the present situations of the Business Japanese Proficiency Test (BJT) in Thailand, as well as trends for BJT improvements as indicated by BJT test-takers’ viewpoints. The research population consists of 2 groups: 61 Thai university students of Japanese and 53 company employees, using Japanese in their work. Research tools include a set of questionnaires for quantitative analysis, as well as a statistics application for data analysis.

The study reveals that the students considered BJT difficult and their ability incompatible with the test. On the contrary, employees of Japanese companies found the test considerably compatible with their ability because of their content relevancy to their work. However, this group of test-takers was not fully aware of BJT values and benefits. This could be the main factor affecting the number of test-takers, as expected. Therefore, to broaden the scope of the BJT test, it is essential to raise awareness of all concerned with BJT, of its significance and benefits by the introduction of the use of the test to Japanese companies as part of its personnel recruitment process. Moreover, the test scores should set as a concrete criterion.
