Abstract

This qualitative research investigates mass communication enterprises’ expectations of mass communication practitioners’ journalistic writing skills. The study encompasses various journalistic writing forms, including news writing skills, article writing skills, analysis writing skills, critique writing skills, interview writing skills, documentary writing skills, and editorial writing skills. The researcher conducted in-depth interviews with key informants, including senior editors, managing editors, or news editors of nine Thai daily newspapers and ten Thai online news agencies.

The research has found that Thai daily newspapers and online news agencies expect that mass media practitioners, i.e. new journalists/writers, should write in various formats, using the Thai language correctly; they should use formal written language and avoid using informal colloquial speech. Additionally, the document must be reviewed before submission. It is vital to enhance the trustworthiness of these media entities. A deep and thorough understanding of the topics at hand is crucial, focusing on ensuring comprehensive coverage without neglecting essential details. Referenced material must be substantial, precise, and derived from verifiable and reliable sources. Emerging journalists and writers are expected to exhibit logical coherence and the ability to simplify complex subjects into narratives that are both accessible and engaging, all while maintaining a rapid progression of ideas and expressing nuanced thoughts. Their contributions should present novel perspectives while firmly grounded in factual accuracy. They must also know and understand SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

In interview techniques, aspiring journalists and writers must exercise a reasonable selection of interviewees supported by exhaustive preparation. Grasping the interview’s objectives and the specific insights anticipated from the interviewee is crucial. This necessitates an extensive review of the interviewee’s previous engagements in the media to formulate innovative and divergent questions from those previously asked by other entities. Proficient interviewing involves skillful crafting of questions and vigilant listening. If you do not understand the answer, ask immediately. It should not be allowed to pass by. Upholding professionalism, treating all individuals with respect, and observing punctuality are imperative, paralleled by a steadfast commitment to ethical principles. This moral framework is essential to prevent the overreach of influential figures, particularly within the political arena, ensuring the integrity of journalistic practice.
