Enhancing Mathematical Concepts of Integers for Grade 7 Students Using Educational Games

Abstract

The objectives of this research were to 1) develop mathematical concepts regarding integers for Grade 7 students using educational games, 2) compare students' mathematical concepts before and after the intervention, and 3) investigate learning management guidelines for this topic. The participants consisted of 28 Grade 7 students at Samchai School, selected via simple random sampling. Research instruments included lesson plans, a mathematical concept test, and student reflection forms. The analysis of the data was done using the percentage, mean, standard deviation, and t-test.

The findings indicated that 1) the majority of students exhibited mathematical concepts regarding integers at a complete conceptual level, demonstrating a continuous positive development trend; 2) the students’ mathematical concepts after the learning management were significantly higher than those before the intervention at the .05 level; and 3) the learning management guidelines using educational games comprised four main stages: introduction, instruction, game-based activities, and conclusion. Significantly, the game-based activity stage was identified as a crucial component in promoting student engagement, consisting of five substeps: grouping, rule explanation, demonstration, gameplay implementation, and learning monitoring.
