COMMUNITY POWER, PARTICIPATION, SUFFICIENCY AND WAY OF LIFE OF FARMERS IN THE IMPACTED AREA OF RICE AND SALT FIELDS
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research aims to explore (1) the community power of rice and salt field communities and (2) community potential in Ban Dung District, Udon Thani Province. The data was collected by using a questionnaire survey with 400 questionnaire respondents. Interviews and focus group discussions with the rice and salt field farmers were also conducted. The research findings revealed that, first, community power was the gathering of farmer communities for the development activities in the areas impacted by rice and salt fields. The activities reflecting the community power at the highest level included “adherence to community rules”, “development activities”, “community services”, “village merit-making ceremonies”, and “cooperation within the community”. Second, community potential reflected modus operandi of each household in which most farmers believed in His Majesty King Rama the IX’s new theory of agriculture based on the sufficiency economy philosophy. The farmers’ level of engagement was rated the highest in the following activities: “cultural merit-making during village festivals”, “using household resources economically”, and “avoiding all vices on Buddhist holy days”. Moreover, the farmers’ sufficient way of life prioritized money saving in bank accounts and village savings funds. In addition, they also grew necessary kitchen garden vegetables in their houses’ open areas. Their common way of life consisted of agriculture, weaving, and rice offering production. The rice offerings were sold at tourist attractions in Kam Chanoad.
