GUIDELINES FOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT OF NEW GENERATION ADMINISTRATORS IN THAI PRIVATE HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS

Abstract

The objectives of this research were (1) to investigate the necessary skills and characteristics from the perspectives of supervisors’ needs in selecting personnel to be the new generation administrators in Thai private higher institutions; (2) to analyze the prioritized needs to develop skills and leadership characteristics of personnel in Thai private higher institutions; and (3) to propose guidelines for developing skills and leadership qualities for new generation administrators Thai private higher institutions. This study was an exploratory sequential mixed method research consisting of three phases. The first phase was a qualitative research to explore the insights with in-depth interviews of 7 key informants classified into the president, vice-president, president assistant, dean, and vice-dean. The qualitative data were analyzed by content analysis. The second phase was a quantitative research to determine the variables based on the data from the distributed questionnaires utilizing the first phase results. The research sample consisted of 80 academic personnel in Thai private higher education institutions. The quantitative data were analyzed with the use of the priority needs index (PNI Modified). The third phase was a qualitative study employing in-depth interview results from the second phase to be used as the guidelines for leadership development of the new generation administrators in Thai private higher education institutions. The qualitative data were analyzed with content analysis.
 
The results revealed that (1) the necessary skills and characteristics in selecting personnel for the new generation administrators in Thai private higher education institutions were work experience in both education and management, responsibility, attitude, and individual conducts, such as generosity, volunteer-mindedness, sacrifce, human relationship, trustworthy, communication, psychology, win-win thinking, and the most important being the continuous self-development; (2) prioritized needs for developing skills and leadership characteristics of Thai private higher education Institution personnel were (a) in the potential job related skills in the occupation, it was found that the skills needed to be developed were the business administration and marketing, academic work, and English; and (b) in the social skills, it was found that the skills needed to be developed were the psychology, leadership (trustworthy/ prestige), and personality; and (3) the development guidelines for the new generation administrators in Thai private higher education institutions were that the administrators must give importance to both the development of needed occupational skills and social skills with clear determination of concrete practice guidelines so that it could be theoretically arranged into practices for the development and preparation of the new generation administrators.
