Factors Affecting the Success of Establishing Community-Protected Areas: A Case Study of Rattaphum, Khuan Niang District, Songkhla Province

Abstract
This study was to analyze the contributing and hindering factors that might influence the establishment of a community-protected area by comparing personal factors, mangrove utilization, various attitudes towards the mangroves, and participation between protected- and non-protected area. Quantitative data were collected from a sample of 244 households and analyzed with descriptive statistics and Chi-square tests. Qualitative data were collected by interviewing community leaders and analyzed using SWOT analysis. The results showed statistically significant differences between samples from both areas in terms of personal factors: age, religion, education and occupation. Factors contributing to success include: understanding the importance of the establishment and the supervision and surveillance of the area. The obstacle factors include the rules and penalties are not strict enough, community conflicts, and leaders are not decisive which created doubt among members.
