Pre-Service Teachers Attitudes towards the Selection of English Language Learning Materials

Abstract
This study aimed to; 1) examine Thai pre-service teachers’ attitudes towards the use of English language learning materials; and 2) investigate the relationship between Thai student teachers majors and thoughts about selecting the English learning materials. The sample consisted of 141 teacher students whose major in English language and Social Studies of the Faculty of Education. A questionnaire was contributed to obtain the data; and it was quantitatively analyzed by using the SPSS program for descriptive statistics in order to calculate Percentage and the Pearson correction (Chi-Square).
The findings illustrated that
- Most of Thai pre-service teachers generally preferred to acquire English through movies (23.40%), YouTube (21.28%), and songs (19.15%). Based on their field of study, it was found that most student teachers from the English language program desired to learn English through songs (28.57%), movies (21.43%); whereas, most student teachers from the Social studies program preferred to obtain English language from movies (24.24%) and followed by YouTube (21.21%).
- In contrast, most of the student teachers did not prefer to learn English from literature or novels (21.74%), textbooks (19.57%). It was additionally found that most student teachers from the English language program from literature or novels (38.4%) and magazine or newspapers (15.38%); while, most of the student teachers from the Social studies program did not desired to acquire English language from textbook (27.27%), literature or novels and short stories (15.15%) were followed.
- Fields of study and types of undesirable and unselective English language learning materials had a significant relationship (Chi - square = 58.17, p = .00).
