Information needs of researchers on research for Southern Thailand development

Abstract
This article aims to explore information needs of researchers involved with Southern Thailand development. The samplings were (1) 327 researchers from 78 organizations who involved with Southern Thailand development research and (2) 3 representatives; director of Strategy Management office or province chief or stakeholder or officer from 3 Southern province groups management as Thai gulf, Andaman and Southern border. Research instruments were (1) 5 rating scale information needs survey with 0.72 of entire reliability value and (2) semi structure interview form including informant information as characteristics, context and Southern province group management, information needs and Southern knowledge confirmation, situations and needs in Southern development, and budgets used in managing Southern province groups enhancing development advantages. Mix method was employed to analyze the data as (1) frequency, percentage, average and standard deviation was used to analyze the data from the survey (2) content analysis was used to analyze the data from the interview.
The findings were
1. Information needs regarding basic information aspect, it was found that overall needs of system design and development was high especially the system functions on searching for available research area (scope on data collecting or research area), searching for research titles based on research population and showing research backgrounds or problems. The least preferable system function was searching for evaluating experts or research advisors.
2. Information needs regarding additional information aspect, it was found that overall needs of system design and development was high. The most preferable system functions were searching for research titles according to Southern province group (Southern border/Thai gulf/ Andaman), searching for related research titles from references, searching for research titles from research area and showing research summaries. The least preferable system functions were searching for research titles according to data collecting methods.
3. Needs, opinions and suggestions from interview were
3.1 The body of knowledge in each group has to be confirmed clearly whether it is needed to gain more knowledge, or it already has some knowledge in order to continue conducting research or innovations.
3.2 Each group would like to apply university research into practice, yet there were limitations found as dissemination, insufficient information, being unable to apply research findings, budgeting and copy rights.
