Abstract

This research was conducted with objectives to develop the forms of herb businesses in SakonNakhon province and to develop a guideline for developing herb businesses in the province. The government and related organizations realized importance of developing Thai herbs that are related to local wisdom and considered an important resource of the country. Therefore, they have determined to make a development plan for systematic and sustainable management of Thai herbs. The National Master Plan on Thai Herbs Development B.E. 2560-2564 (A.D. 2017-2021) was subsequently issued with objectives to not only promote and reserve valuable wisdom related to Thai herbs but also to improve production and utilization of Thai herbs at the highest quality and efficiency in a complete-cycle manner. This will lead to security, prosperity, and sustainability of Thai herbs and promote additional value to the Thai economy.

The sample used for the data collection in this study included the key informants namely two private herb entrepreneurs in SakonNakhon province who had been operating their businesses for over 5 years. Both of them operate and manage herb businesses in the province in a complete-cycle form. The data were collected by means of in-depth interviews together with participative/non-participative observations. The collected data were analyzed via a descriptive content analysis.

The research findings reveal that the main form of herb businesses in SakonNakhon province is a form of family businesses that use labor in the community. Regarding management of herb manufacturing plants, herbal raw materials are bought from villagers who grow herbs in an organic mixed-cultivation approach. Regarding development of herb business forms in the province, supports come from various organizations including the public sector that aims to promote herb production to meet international standards and encourage usage of herbs in people of all ages, from children to the elders. The government also promotes herb marketing in a form of cooperatives in order to further develop herb businesses in the province.
