Abstract
The objective of this paper is to discuss and demonstrate in a case study the application of instructional media (Chinese Skill, Hello Chinese, Learn Pinyin, and Pinyin Master) as a tool for learning and teaching Chinese phonetic alphabets (Pinyin). This study was carried out in the form of survey research in order to analyze the three step functions of specific applications for learning and teaching Chinese; 1) learning, 2) reviewing, and 3) testing. The device used in this study is smartphones installed with Chinese Skill, Hello Chinese, Learn Pinyin, and Pinyin Master applications. The study found 1) Chinese Skill, Hello Chinese, Learn Pinyin and Pinyin Master applications were available for both Android and iOS operating systems without the need for an internet connection. 2) Learn Pinyin was the most suitable instructional medium for Thai learners because it allowed learners to study Chinese phonemes and compounding by providing illustrated examples and explanations in both English and Chinese. Learners could also review lessons by taking unit tests in three forms. 3) Chinese instructors were allowed to apply these instructional media (Chinese Skill, Hello Chinese, Learn Pinyin, and Pinyin Master) to Chinese learning and teaching in classrooms to create good learning environment and reduce the time and place restrictions of learning. The use of smartphones and its applications can be viewed as a guideline for increasing learners’ perceptions of utility value in their smartphone use. Such instructional media should be recommended for learners to expand their knowledge.
