Self-Sufficient Economy : Challenge and Opportunity for Thai Society

His Majesty’s “Sufficiency Economy” is timely in pointing the way forward. It has given heart to His people when they are in dire need, and is so well received that it provided the foundation for the formulation, in particular the Ninth National Economic and Social Development Plan.
Thailand under His Majesty’s guidance has been applying the notion with an aim to create balance and sustainability in its economic system in various aspects in term of agriculture, community empowerment, poverty reduction, sustainability in economic growth and competitiveness.
Therefore, this paper try to examine the self-sufficiency economy philosophy of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej in particular the Thai society, rural and community which can be adopted this philosophy to solve the problem in term of economic and social sphere.
However, the self-sufficiency economy philosophy seems need to accelerate much more to discover the economy after economic crises in 1997.
