CHILD AND ADOLESCENT RESEARCH GAP IN THAILAND: IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE AND POLICY

Abstract

The primary purpose of our research synthesis on children and youth in Thailand was to analyze empirical research gaps and to provide recommendations for future studies related to the development of children and youth in Thailand. Samples were the studies related to children and youth that met the inclusion criteria, and the inputs from the experts. The instruments used included the data record forms and an interview form. The content analysis approach was used to analyze the data.

The results revealed 6 research gaps related to children and youth in Thailand: 1) up-to-date knowledge that keeps up with social change, 2) depth and system of knowledge that have impacts on policy, 3) the collaboration among scholars, researchers, or related-institutes in the area, 4) studies on children and youth in the remote area, 5) studies aimed to address the future challenges, and 6) the development of researchers and the support systems. Suggestions on policies for the research relating to children and youth in Thailand were to have operational measure on specifying research topics or national-level core research questions for the development of children and youth, facilitating high impact research, focusing on collaboration in children and youth development, setting up standard of practices for research conducted in this topic. The research policy for children and youth development in Thailand should be implemented with clear direction and process that link to efficiently utilize the knowledge gained from research. The efficiency of the nation’s research management related to children and youth development should be emphasized.
