Social Stratification and Inequality Attitudes in Thai Society: A Qualitative Study of Bangkok Metropolitan Area University Students

This study examines the attitudes about social stratification and inequality in Thai society among university students in the Bangkok Metropolitan Area (BMA). Data was gathered by in-depth interview from 52 undergraduates aged 20 to 25 at three BMA universities, chosen by purposive sampling. The data was analyzed by content analysis and thematic categorization. Results are that most students understand social class as a human-created, socially constructed system for division and organization with five dimensions determining social class: education, economic status, occupation, power, and physical appearance. On attitudes toward the benefits of social stratification, most see social class as creating inequality, while others perceive partial benefits in social organization and policy formulation. In the Thai societal context, students discern that social stratification creates the most pronounced inequality in education, economics, and power. Most participants believe that Thai society can address class-based inequality. These findings demonstrate that students are systematically aware of social stratification issues in Thailand and have complex perspectives on their multi-level resolution.
