Criteria for Judging Ethics in Buddhist Philosophy

Abstract

Ethics is good behavior and righteous conduct that when human beings follow, they will have a good life and prosperity. Ethics are essential for human life and coexistence for the welfare of society. However, even though human beings live within the framework of social ethics. The problem of setting rules for judging ethical aspects of each society is different, so it is inevitable that conflicts will arise. The objective of this article is to study the criteria for judging the ethical viewpoints of various philosophers. As well as the Buddhist philosophical view that there are opinions and how to criteria used in judging ethics. From studying this article, it can be concluded that Ethics judgment criteria can be divided into three large groups as 1. A group that uses the intent as criteria for judging ethics. 2. A group that uses utilitarianism as criteria for judging ethics.  3. A group that has a combination of intent and utilitarianism as criteria for judging ethics. For the moral judgment criteria in Buddhist philosophy, it is similar to group 3 that has a combination of intent and utilitarianism, but with more depth, therefore, does not fit into any of these 3 groups.
