Abstract

This article is an exploration into the relationship between social media and the construction of self and identity in the post-modern society. It has merged together the concept of New Digital Media (NDM), particularly social media, and the concept of self and identity formation. Drawing upon theories and concepts of Social Psychology and Cultural Studies from scholars such as Marx (1818-1883), Erikson (1902-1994), Tajfel (1919-1982), Baudrillard (1929-2007), Foucault (1926-1984), Hall (1932-2014), Turkle (1948-now), and Gidden (1938-now), this article aims to investigate how identity is formed within the context of social media. The article has shown that social media is a virtual space for the users to explore materials for the construction of self-identity. It’s also used as a mean to express and experiment identity within the “power discourse” and the context of the society.
