LIST OF 1,000 BASIC WORDS IN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FOR QUALITY OF LIFE AND SOCIETY (SC 103) FOR CHINESE STUDENTS USING THAI AS A SECOND LANGUAGE OF DHURAKIJ PUNDIT UNIVERSITY
Abstract
This research aims to analyze and establish a list of 1,000 basic Thai words used in Science and Technology for Quality of Life and Society Course (SC 103) taught to Chinese students of Dhurakij Pundit University who used Thai as a second language.
The samples used for this study were 13 Chinese students who enrolled in Science and Technology for Quality of Life and Society Course (SC 103) in the first semester of 2013 academic year and understood Thai to some extent. The instrument used to carry out the data collection was a set of questionnaire. The questionnaire was divided into three parts. Part 1 dealt with personal information of the respondent. Part 2 dealt with the respondent’s understanding of basic Thai words. Part 3 dealt with the recommendations of the respondent needing increasing the necessary Thai words that they should know. There were 1,000 basic Thai words that were selected and analyzed by using cluster analysis to investigate the relationship between the frequently occurring of Thai words and the number of students who did not understand.
The results of this study were found that the total 1,013 basic Thai words could be included in three groups. Group 1 had 16 words that most frequently occurred and most students could understand (1.58%). The total number of them was general word. Group 2 had 69 words that most frequently occurred but most students could not understand (6.8%). They were 3 technical words and 66 general words. Group 3 had 928 words that rarely frequently occurred and most students could not understand (91.60%). They were 270 technical words and 658 general words.
