THE STUDY AND DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIAL INTELLIGENCE FOR HIGHER EDUCATION STUDENTS IN THE SOUTH OF THAILAND

The purposes of this research were to study students social intelligence components, study the levels of students’ social intelligence and result of social intelligence training group program for developing higher education students’ social intelligence in the south of Thailand. The sampling of the research were the first to the fourth years of higher education students from the public universities in the south of Thailand. The subjects were divided into 2 groups. The first group consisted of 900 students was a representative for a social intelligence component study. The second group included 20 students of first to the fourth years of Rajabhat Songkhla University. They were randomly selected into two groups each of consisted of 10 students. The first experimental group participated in social intelligence training group program while the second control group was no training. The research instruments were social intelligence test with reliability coefficient (alpha) of 0.85 and the social intelligence training group program for developing social intelligence with item objective (IOC) ranged from 0.6-1.0. The data were analysis by Confirmatory Analysis and Repeated Measures ANOVA.
The results of the study were as follows;
1. The confirmatory factor analysis that the social intelligence included of three factors : The first factor was social awareness included three components as follows: perception of others, understanding of others and empathy. The second factor was social cognition factor included three components as follows: cognition of behavioral, social information and judgment in social situations. The third factor was social skills included three components as follows: emotional expressivity, social expressivity and social making connection. These three factors were high loading at 0.05 level and be able to measure the social intelligence functioning factors.
2. The social intelligence total mean scores of 900 students revealed average.
3. Statistically significant differences of social intelligence in the training group before, after and the follow up experiments. The difference follows up at 0.05 level. The results of this study indicated that the social intelligence training group program was a key factor to increase a positive change in the social intelligence in the higher education students.
4. Statistically significant differences of social intelligence were found between the participated training group program and the control group before, after and the end experiments. The difference follows up at 0.05 level.
