Migratory Experiences and Memories of Former Transnational Workers from Thailand in Africa

Abstract

This research article has three main objectives: 1) to investigate the factors motivating Thai workers to migrate to foreign countries for work; 2) to explain the recollection of their experiences laboring in Africa, spanning from pre-migration preparations to post-migration reflections; and 3) to examine how these memories of toiling in Africa are currently represented. Qualitative research was done with data collected by in-depth interview with former migrant workers from Lampang Province who worked in Gabon, Congo, South Africa, and Libya. The research is based on the theoretical frameworks of migration and memory. Results were that two primary factors influenced the decision to work abroad: the desire to improve their family's economic status, especially through their children's education, and to acquire savings for the future. Before their African experiences, most participants underwent internal, regional, and transnational migrations, including to the Middle East. They recalled different aspects of their lives before, during, and after their time abroad, encompassing daily routines, dietary habits, language use, and adaptation in diverse societies with distinct cultural and religious practices. Some endured challenging work environments such as jungles and deserts. Notably, Thai migrant workers in Libya recounted the struggle to escape warfare and return home. Adaptation narratives after the return migration were also examined, emphasizing how individual memories intertwined in collective memories, manifested through significant events and materials to serve as reminders transcending time and place.
