SPATIAL SPILLOVER EFFECTS ANALYSIS OF TOURISM ON URBAN ECONOMIC GROWTH IN THAILAND
Keywords:
Tourism, Spatial Spillover Effect, Urban EconomicAbstract
This study investigates the spatial patterns and the spatial spillover effect of tourism on urban economic growth using panel data from 76 provinces in Thailand during 2006 to 2014. Spatial autocorrelation and spatial panel data model have been used, based on conditional convergence framework to demonstrate the relationship among variables. The results of the spatial patterns show that the visiting of the tourists are spread in random pattern, but it has slightly increased in clustered pattern since 2011, and there is an increasing tendency in clustered pattern every year. The analysis of the spatial spillover effects analysis of tourism on urban economic growth results in tourism development has a substantial impact on urban economic growth. Moreover, tourism development has increased the economic growth of neighboring provinces through the spillover effects of tourism without decreasing the economic gap among provinces.
