A Social Support Approach to Develop Geriatric Skills to Improve Media Literacy

Abstract

This research presents data about social media use among geriatric dwellers in six districts of the Bangkok Metropolitan Area (BMA): Thawi Watthana, Samphanthawong, Nong Khaem, Bang Kapi, Sathon, and Bangsue. Social media and media literacy behavior of old residents were analyzed to create safe, effective, and informed social media use guidelines. Social support should be the main motivation for the social networking group, exchanging knowledge among public, private, and civil society sectors to enhance the potential of BMA retirees. In addition, youth technology volunteer groups facilitated social media access, promoting intergenerational communication. 

           Mixed methods research was done. Quantitative results on social support affecting online media use by studying material, emotional, informational, and social interaction support were that social interaction was most influential (mean = 2.76), followed by emotional (mean = 2.65) and informational (mean = 2.57), respectively.
