INTERCULTURAL COMPETENCE AND GOOD PRACTICES TO SUPPORT INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS’ CROSS-CULTURAL ADAPTATION IN THAILAND

Thai policy which aims towards becoming ASEAN education hub leads to the increase of student mobility and international students in Thailand. Therefore, Thai higher education institutions need measures to support international student adaptation. This, in turn, requires knowledge and understanding about issues presented in this article: 1) situation and problems of international students in general and in Thailand particularly Chinese students which are the majority group of international students in Thailand; 2) cultural competence concepts including key components and developmental levels; 3) cross-cultural adaptation process including the Revised W-shaped model and Kim’s cross-cultural adaption theory; 4) Good practices for higher education institutions, students affairs personnel and/or international student office staff, and instructors to support international students’ cross-cultural adaptation process in Thailand.
